What is a fractional executive?
A fractional executive is a senior leader who holds a real C-suite seat at a company for one to three days a week on an ongoing basis, owning the function and its outcomes, and usually doing the same for two or three other companies at once. The common seats are CFO, CMO, CTO and COO. In the UK the day rate runs £600 to £1,500 in 2026 depending on the seat, and two days a week is the most common shape.
The four things that make the definition hold
Take any one away and the person is something else, usually a consultant or an interim.
- They hold the seat. A fractional CFO is the CFO. They own the number, manage whoever is in the function, sit in the leadership meeting and answer to the board when the function misses. The company does not have another person doing that job.
- Part of a week, not all of it. One to three days, with two the most common. The company gets the judgement and the ownership without paying for five days of a person whose decisions take two.
- Ongoing. There is no end date assumed. Engagements run six months to several years and end when the function has grown into a full-time job, or the need has passed.
- Several companies at once. Most fractional executives serve two or three companies and contract with each through their own limited company. That is what makes the model work financially for the executive, and it is why they are not employees.
What a fractional executive is not
- Not a consultant. A consultant advises and leaves. The function still needs running. The test is who the board asks when the function misses: if the answer is the founder, the person was a consultant.
- Not an interim. An interim holds the seat full-time for a defined stretch, usually three to nine months, covering a departure or a crisis. Fractional, interim or full-time sets the three side by side.
- Not a non-executive director. A NED attends the board and holds the executives to account. A fractional executive is one of the executives being held to account.
- Not an advisor with a title. A few hours a month on a retainer is advisory. Below about one day a week the person cannot own anything, and the word fractional is doing work it has not earned.
- Not an agency. An agency delivers a service with its own team. A fractional executive builds and runs the company’s own function.
The seats, with 2026 UK day rates
The bands below come off the same data as the day-rates page. The monthly figure is two days a week at the low and high ends of the band, before VAT, with no employer costs on top because the executive is not an employee.

How the engagement works
- Days. Fixed days a week, agreed in the brief. Two is the most common. The days are usually the same each week so the function has a rhythm.
- Contract. A contract for services between the company and the executive’s limited company, with a notice period of about a month on each side. What the contract should say.
- IR35. Decided by the facts of each engagement, not by the word fractional. Serving several clients is helpful evidence but does not settle it. IR35 for fractional executives.
- Day ninety. The outcomes that should be true after ninety days, written into the brief before the start. Each hiring guide lists them for its seat.
Who hires one
Companies that need a seat’s judgement before they need five days of it. In practice that is a founder-led business after a funding round, a company between about twenty and two hundred people where one function has outgrown the founder, a business preparing for a sale or an audit, and a portfolio company whose investor wants a CFO in the room without a CFO salary on the P&L. The PE and VC-backed page covers the last of those.
Where the word comes from
A fraction of a week. The term started with the fractional CFO, because finance was the first function where a company could see that it needed the judgement two days a week and the bookkeeping five, and those were different people. The same logic reached marketing, technology and operations, and the word now covers every seat in the table above.
Common questions
What is a fractional executive, in one sentence?
A fractional executive is a senior leader who holds a real C-suite seat at a company for one to three days a week on an ongoing basis, owning the function and its outcomes, and usually doing the same for two or three other companies at once.
Is a fractional executive the same as a consultant?
No. A consultant advises and leaves; the company still has to run the function. A fractional executive runs it: they own the number, manage the people in it, sit in the leadership meeting and are accountable for the outcome. The test is who the board asks when the function misses.
Is a fractional executive the same as an interim?
No. An interim holds the seat full-time for a defined stretch, usually three to nine months, covering a departure or a crisis. A fractional executive holds it part of the week with no end date assumed. The two are often confused because both are senior people on a contract, but the shape of the week and the reason for the hire are different.
How many days a week does fractional mean?
Two is the most common, with one and three both normal. Below one day a week the role is advisory rather than fractional. Above three the comparison with a full-time hire usually flips, and the company should rerun the arithmetic.
How much does a fractional executive cost in the UK?
By the day, at a published rate. UK day rates in 2026 run from £600 a day at the low end of the people and growth seats to £1,500 at the top of the CFO and CISO bands. Two days a week at a mid-band rate is a four-figure sum a month for every seat, with no employer national insurance, pension or search fee on top. The day-rates page lists every seat.
Is a fractional executive an employee?
Almost never. They contract with the company, usually through their own limited company, and serve several clients at once. That makes IR35 status a question of the facts of each engagement rather than of the word fractional, and it is decided per contract.
Which seats are hired fractionally?
CFO is the most established, followed by CMO, CTO and COO. Chief revenue, people, product, growth, information security and general counsel seats are all hired fractionally in the UK now. The seats that work are the ones where judgement matters more than hours.
