Hire a fractional People Lead
A fractional people lead builds the thing that keeps a growing team working: hiring that finds the right people, structure that survives growth, and the awkward conversations nobody else will have.
What a fractional People Lead owns
- Hiring: the process, the scorecards, and stopping bad hires before they start
- Onboarding, so new people are useful in weeks rather than months
- Performance and progression frameworks that are not just a form
- UK employment compliance, contracts and the risky conversations
- Culture as something maintained deliberately, not printed on a wall
Signs you need one
- You are hiring fast and the last few have not worked out
- The team is past twenty and there is still no structure
- Good people are leaving and the exit interviews all rhyme
- You have a performance problem and nobody knows how to handle it properly
What it costs in the UK
Higher end for scale-ups hiring at pace and for TUPE, restructures or redundancy work.
Rates are set by the operator and paid to them directly. We are not in the payment path, and the operator never pays us a fee.
How this compares
An HR administrator handles contracts and payroll. A recruiter fills a role and moves on. A people lead builds the system: who you hire, how they are onboarded, how performance is managed, and how you stay on the right side of UK employment law while doing it.
What to look for
- UK employment law experience specifically, since this is one seat where jurisdiction matters
- Someone who has scaled a team through the size you are approaching
- Ask how they handled a performance exit, which is the part most people avoid
- Whether they can hire as well as administer, since those are different skills
Common questions
- What does a fractional people lead cost in the UK?
- Typically £600 to £1,100 a day, commonly one to two days a week. Rates run higher for scale-ups hiring at pace, and for restructures, redundancy or TUPE work where the legal exposure is real.
- When does a company need a people lead?
- Usually around twenty to thirty people, when informal management stops working, or earlier if you are hiring quickly. A bad hire at that stage costs far more than the fee.
- Is this the same as an HR manager?
- No. HR administration handles contracts, payroll and policy. A people lead designs how you hire, develop and retain people, and is usually the one dealing with the hardest conversations.
- Can they help with UK employment law?
- Most have strong working knowledge of it and will tell you when something needs an employment solicitor rather than guessing. That judgement is a large part of the value.
- Do you charge commission on their rate?
- No. You book and pay them directly and we take nothing from it.
Operator Search: £999 to run, £2,500 if you hire
Can't find the right People Lead, or haven't got the time to look? We run the search and put three vetted operators in front of you in five business days. Both numbers agreed before anything starts, and the operator pays nothing either way.
