What is fractional work?
Fractional work is a senior role held for a fraction of the working week, usually one to three days, on an ongoing basis, by somebody who holds the same kind of role at two or three other companies at the same time. The person owns the function and its outcomes on their days, contracts rather than being employed, and is paid by the day. In the UK that day rate runs £600 to £1,500 in 2026 depending on the seat.
The model in one paragraph
A company that needs a chief financial officer’s judgement two days a week and a bookkeeper’s hands five days a week has, for most of business history, had to choose between paying a full CFO salary for two days of CFO work and going without. Fractional work is the third option: the CFO holds the seat on Tuesdays and Thursdays, holds two other seats on the other days, and each company pays for the days it uses. The same arithmetic now applies to marketing, technology, operations, people, product, security and legal.
The words the market uses for it
Fractional executive is the common term and has its own definition page. Fractional leadership and fractional management describe the practice; the second is also used for the same model one layer down, a head of finance or operations held two days a week. Fractional CXO is the platform word for any C-suite seat held this way. Portfolio career is the executive’s own phrase for holding several seats. Fractional director and part-time director are the UK phrases for the same arrangement one word down from the C-suite, a finance director or marketing director held two days a week, and are what owner-managed businesses tend to search for. Fractional staff and fractional strategist are looser and usually describe freelance or advisory arrangements wearing the word.
What it is not
- Not freelance. A freelancer is hired for a deliverable and judged on it: the website, the model, the campaign. Fractional work is judged on a function. The freelancer leaves when the piece is done; the fractional executive stays while the function needs leading.
- Not part-time. The hours look the same. The relationship does not: part-time usually means an employee with fewer days, one employer, holiday and a pension. Fractional usually means a contractor with several clients. The contract decides which one it is, not the day count. Fractional CFO or part-time CFO.
- Not interim. An interim holds the seat five days a week for a defined stretch, covering a departure or a transaction. Fractional work is fewer days with no end date assumed. Interim management.
- Not consulting. A consultant advises and leaves; the function still has to be run by somebody. Fractional work is running it. The test is who the board asks when the number misses.
- Not advisory. A few hours a month on a retainer, a board advisor, a mentor. Below about a day a week nobody can own anything, and the word fractional is doing work it has not earned.
How it is paid
By the day, at a rate the executive publishes, or by a monthly retainer that states how many days it buys. The executive invoices through their own limited company, so there is no employer National Insurance, pension, holiday or recruitment fee on top of the rate, which is most of the saving against a full-time hire. The 2026 UK day-rate table lists every seat, and the cost calculator puts the fractional and full-time figures side by side. Employment status is decided by the facts of each engagement, not by the word: IR35 for fractional executives covers that for the UK and 1099 versus W-2 for the US.
Who does it
People who have held the full-time seat, usually across several companies and a decade or more, and now hold it at two or three companies at once. The model does not work for somebody who has not held the seat, because what the company is paying for is judgement earned in it. Becoming a fractional executive covers the earnings, the client load and when it does not work, seat by seat.
Who buys it
Companies between roughly twenty and two hundred people, where one function has outgrown the founder but does not yet fill a week. Funded startups after a round, owner-managed businesses preparing for a sale or an audit, and portfolio companies whose investor wants a CFO in the room without a CFO salary on the P&L. The city pages show where the demand sits.
The seats, defined one at a time
what a fractional CFO is, what a fractional CMO is, what a fractional COO is and what a fractional CTO is. Every other seat is on the seat index.
Common questions
What is fractional work?
Fractional work is a senior role held for a fraction of the working week, usually one to three days, on an ongoing basis, by somebody who holds the same kind of role at other companies at the same time. The person owns the function and its outcomes on their days, contracts rather than being employed, and is paid by the day or the month rather than a salary.
What does fractional mean in a job title?
A fraction of a week. Fractional CFO, fractional CMO, fractional COO and fractional CTO all mean the real seat, held part of the week, by somebody doing the same elsewhere. The word says nothing about seniority on its own, which is why it is sometimes attached to roles that are really freelance or advisory.
Is fractional work the same as freelancing?
No. A freelancer delivers a defined piece of work and is judged on the deliverable. A fractional executive holds a seat and is judged on the function: the number, the team, the outcome. The commercial form is similar, a contract through the person's own company, but the accountability is different.
Is fractional work the same as part-time work?
The hours are similar; the relationship differs. Part-time usually means an employee on the payroll with fewer days, one employer, holiday and pension. Fractional usually means a contractor serving several companies at once. The same seat can be filled either way, and the contract, not the hours, decides which it is.
What is fractional management?
Fractional management is the same model applied to a management layer rather than a single C-suite seat: a head of operations, a head of finance or a head of marketing held two days a week by somebody experienced, usually in a company too small for the full-time role. The term is also used, loosely, for the whole practice of hiring leadership by the day.
What is a fractional CXO?
CXO stands for any chief officer, so a fractional CXO is any C-suite seat held fractionally. The phrase is used by platforms and firms to describe the category rather than one seat. In practice the common ones are CFO, CMO, COO and CTO, with CISO, CPO, CRO and general counsel seats behind them.
How is fractional work paid?
By the day in the UK, at a published rate, or by a monthly retainer that states how many days it buys. The executive invoices through their own company, so there is no employer National Insurance, pension or holiday on top. In the UK the 2026 day rates run from about £600 to £1,500 depending on the seat.
Is a fractional director the same as a part-time director?
In practice, usually yes, with one difference in the contract. A part-time director in the UK is often an employee on reduced days with one company, holiday and a pension. A fractional director is a contractor holding the same seat at two or three companies and invoicing by the day. Both describe a finance, marketing or operations director held two days a week; which one applies is decided by the engagement terms rather than the title.
Who does fractional work?
People who have held the full-time seat, usually for a decade or more across several companies, and now hold it part-time at two or three companies at once. The model does not work for somebody who has not held the seat, because the value is judgement earned in it, and it does not work for somebody who wants one employer.
