What a fractional sales director is, and what the other sales titles mean

A fractional Sales Director is a senior sales leader who holds the sales seat at a company for one to three days a week, on an ongoing basis, owning the sales process, the forecast, the pipeline reviews and the hiring and coaching of the sellers, so the founder stops being the only person who can close. In the UK the day rate is £700 to £1,300 in 2026, and two days a week is the most common shape.

Also called

Fractional head of sales, Part-time sales director, Fractional VP of sales, in US-owned companies, Fractional CRO, once marketing and customer success report into the seat and Fractional commercial director, in owner-managed UK businesses. The job is the same under each name; the words differ by market and by who is selling it. What a fractional executive is covers the pattern across every seat.

What the title means in practice

They take the founder out of every dealMost companies that hire one have a founder who still closes most of the revenue. The first job is writing down how those deals are actually won, so somebody else can win them the same way.
A process before a headcount planStages with exit criteria, a qualification standard and a weekly pipeline review that ends in decisions. Hiring sellers into a business without these produces expensive people guessing, which is why the order matters.
The forecast becomes something the board believesA forecast built on stage probabilities nobody has tested is a hope. The fractional sales director rebuilds it from conversion history, calls it every week and explains the misses.
Quota, comp plans and the first sales hiresSetting targets the team can reach, designing commission that pays for the behaviour wanted, and interviewing the first account executives and the sales manager who will run them day to day.

The sales title ladder, and which titles are this seat

Sales titles are used loosely and the same job carries four names depending on the company. The table sets them out from the bottom up. The seat on this page is the top sales role in a company of roughly ten to two hundred people.

UK and US naming

In UK companies the top sales role is most often called sales director or head of sales, and commercial director in owner-managed, industrial and distribution businesses. In US companies the same seat is VP of sales, and becomes CRO once marketing and customer success report into it.

A UK advert for a VP of sales is usually a US-owned business or a software company borrowing US titles. The work is the same seat, and so is the day rate.

Fractional sales director job description

The scope a brief for this seat usually lists. Each item is a thing the person owns, not a task they perform; at one to three days a week the owning is the job.

Reports to the chief executive, works alongside marketing on pipeline, and line-manages the sellers or the sales manager.

What it costs

A fractional sales director charges £700 to £1,300 a day in the UK in 2026. Often part fixed fee, part performance-linked. Agree the structure in writing before starting. At two days a week that is £5,367 to £9,967 a month, before VAT and with no employer costs on top, because the executive is not an employee. The full arithmetic, at every day count and against a full-time hire, is on the fractional sales director cost page.

Where the word comes from

Sales went fractional later than finance, because founders tend to believe nobody else can sell their product. It changed when software companies found that the founder's network ran out around the first few million in revenue, and that a repeatable process needed somebody who had built one before.

Common questions

What does fractional sales director mean?

A senior sales leader who holds the top sales seat for a fraction of the week, usually one to three days, on an ongoing basis. They own the sales process, the forecast, quota and the first sales hires, so revenue stops depending on the founder closing every deal.

Is a fractional sales director the same as a sales manager?

No. A sales manager runs a team of sellers day to day and reports to the sales leader. A fractional sales director is that sales leader: they design the process and the targets the sales manager works to, and often hire the sales manager.

Does a fractional sales director sell?

Some, on the largest deals and while the process is being written down, but the seat is building the function rather than carrying a bag. A company that mainly needs more meetings booked needs sellers or an agency, and a good fractional sales director will say so.

How much does a fractional sales director cost?

£700 to £1,300 a day in the UK in 2026, most often at one to two days a week. Often part fixed fee, part performance-linked. Agree the structure in writing before starting. The monthly and annual arithmetic is on the cost page for the seat.

What does interim sales director mean?

An interim sales director holds the seat full time, 5 days a week, for a fixed 3 to 9 months, covering a departure, a transaction or a crisis. A fractional sales director holds it 2 days a week with no end date. At the same day rate, interim runs £13,417 to £24,917 a month against £5,367 to £9,967. Fractional or interim, side by side.
