What is a fractional head of data?
A fractional head of data is a senior data leader who holds the data seat at a company for one to three days a week, on an ongoing basis, owning the data model, the metrics everybody argues about, the analytics stack and the governance that keeps the numbers trusted, and directing the analysts or agency that build it. In the UK the day rate is £700 to £1,200 in 2026, and two days a week is the most common shape.
Also called
Fractional head of data, Fractional chief data officer (CDO), Fractional head of analytics and Part-time data director. The job is the same under each name; the words differ by market and by who is selling it. What a fractional executive is covers the pattern across every seat.
What the title means in practice
What a fractional head of data is not
- Not an analytics agency. Builds dashboards and pipelines to a brief; nobody inside decides which numbers matter or keeps them true. Fractional head of data or an analytics agency.
- Not a CTO. Owns the platform and the engineering team; the head of data owns what the data means and who can use it. What a fractional CTO does.
- Not a CISO. Owns security controls across the company; the head of data owns the data inventory those controls protect. What a fractional CISO does.
Head of data, chief data officer and chief AI officer
Head of data is the working title in a company of up to a few hundred people: the person who owns the model, the metrics and the analysts. Chief data officer is the board-level version, usually found in larger or regulated businesses where data governance is a standing risk. In a fractional brief the two are the same seat and priced in the same band.
Chief AI officer is a newer title for somebody who owns where AI is used across the company. It overlaps with this seat and has its own page.
Fractional head of data job description
The scope a brief for this seat usually lists. Each item is a thing the person owns, not a task they perform; at one to three days a week the owning is the job.
- Metric definitions agreed with the leadership team and published
- The data model and warehouse, built once and documented
- Reporting the board and each team actually use, with the rest retired
- Data governance: access, retention and UK GDPR records of processing
- Data quality checks and an owner for each source system
- Readiness assessment for machine learning and AI projects
Reports to the chief executive or the CFO, works with the CTO on the platform, and leads the analysts and data engineers.
What it costs
A fractional head of data charges £700 to £1,200 a day in the UK in 2026. Higher end for machine learning and AI strategy work as well as pipeline building. At two days a week that is £5,367 to £9,200 a month, before VAT and with no employer costs on top, because the executive is not an employee. The full arithmetic, at every day count and against a full-time hire, is on the fractional head of data cost page.
Where the word comes from
Data leadership went fractional as companies past their first funding round found the board pack disagreed with the finance system, and the analyst they had hired spent the week reconciling. The arrival of AI tools sharpened it, because every AI plan starts with the question of whether the data can be trusted.
Common questions
What does fractional head of data mean?
A head of data who holds the data seat for a fraction of the week, usually one to three days, on an ongoing basis. They own the metric definitions, the data model, the reporting and the governance, and direct whoever builds the pipelines.
Is a fractional head of data the same as a fractional CDO?
In most briefs, yes. Chief data officer is the board-level title used by larger and regulated companies; head of data is the working title elsewhere. The day rate is the same band, and the brief decides the scope rather than the word.
When does a company need a fractional head of data?
When two dashboards give two answers to the same question, when an analyst spends the week reconciling, before an AI project that depends on clean data, or when due diligence is coming and nobody can say where personal data lives.
How much does a fractional head of data cost?
£700 to £1,200 a day in the UK in 2026, most often at one to two days a week. Higher end for machine learning and AI strategy work as well as pipeline building. The monthly and annual arithmetic is on the cost page for the seat.
What does interim head of data mean?
An interim head of data holds the seat full time, 5 days a week, for a fixed 3 to 9 months, covering a departure, a transaction or a crisis. A fractional head of data holds it 2 days a week with no end date. At the same day rate, interim runs £13,417 to £23,000 a month against £5,367 to £9,200. Fractional or interim, side by side.
