Fractional executive hourly rates in the United States

Fractional executives in the US charge the equivalent of about $100 to $288 an hour in 2026 depending on the seat; these are the published day-rate bands divided by 8 hours.

Rates checked 1 November 2026. National bands, stated as market observation. The UK version converts the bench's own sterling bands the same way.

Per hour is the day rate divided by 8, our arithmetic. Per month is the day rate times two days times 46 working weeks, spread over twelve months.

Why US quotes come per hour or per month

Hourly billing is common across American professional services, and fractional work often follows it, so many operators quote that way by default. The other common shape is a monthly retainer, which is easier to budget than either. In the UK the same work is almost always quoted by the day. None of the three is cheaper: they are one price written three ways, and the only thing worth checking is that they reconcile.

Turning an hourly quote into days

Divide the hours a month by 8 for days a month, and divide that by 3.8 (46 working weeks over twelve months) for days a week. A quote for 64 hours a month is roughly two days a week. Then multiply the hourly rate back up by 8 and set it against the band above: a CFO quoting $275 an hour is quoting $2,200 a day, the top of the national band, which is $16,867 a month at two days a week.

When an hourly rate is the wrong way to buy

When the work is owning a function rather than finishing a task. An hourly contract pays for time logged, which pushes both sides toward measuring presence, and it makes every extra call a cost decision for the buyer. For a seat that carries the board pack, the forecast or the engineering roadmap, agree a monthly retainer with the days it buys, the notice either side gives and the response time between days written down. Keep hourly billing for short, defined pieces of work with an end.

Classification matters more than the unit. A fractional executive is normally engaged on a 1099, and whether that stands depends on the substance of the arrangement rather than how it is billed.

Where these numbers come from

The day-rate bands are the ones published on the US day rates page, stated there as national market observation rather than survey data. The hourly figures divide them by the same 8-hour convention every page on this site uses, and the monthly figures run through the same function as the calculator. The method is on how the research is done.

Common questions

What is the hourly rate for a fractional CFO in the US?

About $125 to $275 an hour in 2026, which is the national day-rate band of $1,000 to $2,200 divided by a 8-hour day. New York and the Bay Area sit at and above the top of the band, and the Midwest and the South generally below its midpoint.

How does an hourly quote translate into days a week?

Divide the hours a month in the quote by 8 to get days a month, then compare the monthly total with the day-rate band times those days. A quote for 64 hours a month is about two days a week, which at the CFO band is $7,667 to $16,867 a month.

Is hourly billing a bad sign in a fractional executive?

Not on its own. Hourly billing is common in the US, and it suits a short, defined piece of work. It is the wrong shape for owning a function, because it pays for time logged rather than for the decisions the seat is there to make, so for an ongoing role ask for a monthly retainer with the days written down.
