What a fractional CTO costs in the US

A fractional CTO in the US costs $11,500 a month at the mid-band $1,500 day rate and two days a week, as of 2026. What that comes to at other commitments, and how it compares with the full-time version of the same seat once the employer carries everything that comes with it, is below.

Day rate½ day a week1 day a week2 days a week3 days a week
Lower end$1,000 a day$1,917$23,000 a year$3,833$46,000 a year$7,667$92,000 a year$11,500$138,000 a year
Mid-band$1,500 a day$2,875$34,500 a year$5,750$69,000 a year$11,500$138,000 a year$17,250$207,000 a year
Higher end$2,000 a day$3,833$46,000 a year$7,667$92,000 a year$15,333$184,000 a year$23,000$276,000 a year

Monthly figures are the annual cost spread evenly, based on 46 billable weeks a year rather than 52, because operators take holidays too. The middle row is the arithmetic midpoint of the published band and is labelled as such rather than as a typical rate, which is a number nobody actually charges.

Against the full-time version of the same seat

A full-time CTO in the US sits around $260,000, a national mid-market base, and cash only: at a venture-backed company the equity is usually the larger half of the package and is not counted here. That is not what they cost. Once employer taxes and benefits are counted the carried cost adds about 14 per cent on top, before the search fee that only lands in the first year.

Base salary assumed$260,000
Social Security 6.20% to the $184,500 wage base$11,439
Medicare 1.45%, uncapped$3,770
Federal unemployment 0.6% on the first $7,000$42
State unemployment assumed, varies by state$500
Health insurance assumed, employee only$9,000
Retirement match 4%, assumed$10,400
Search fee 20%, one-off$52,000
First year, all in$347,151

Why you would still hire full-time

There is no crossover inside a working week here, and that is worth saying plainly rather than dressing up. At $1,500 a day, five days a week of fractional time still costs less than the full-time seat once employer taxes and benefits and the search fee are in. Loaded salaries in the US are simply high against local day rates.

So price is not the argument for hiring. Availability is. A full-time CTO is in the seat every day, carries the function rather than directing it, and has no other client with a claim on the same week. If the work genuinely fills a week, hire somebody, and we run that search too with the fee on the page.

What the day rate does not include

Expenses for on-site days, agreed before anybody starts. And none of the employer side: no Social Security or Medicare contribution, no unemployment tax, no retirement match, no health insurance, no paid leave, and no notice period to buy out. Classification is the thing to get right rather than assume. A fractional executive is normally engaged on a 1099, but whether that stands depends on the substance of the arrangement and several states apply their own stricter tests. That question has its own page. This is general information, not tax advice.

Common questions

How much does a fractional CTO cost per month in the US?

A fractional CTO in the US charges $1,000 to $2,000 a day. At the mid-band $1,500, two days a week works out at about $11,500 a month. One day a week is roughly $5,750, and half a day a week about $2,875. You pay the operator directly, so there is no commission on top and none of the employer costs that come with the seat.

Is a fractional CTO cheaper than hiring one full-time in the US?

On cost alone, at every commitment up to a full week. A full-time CTO at $260,000 costs roughly $347,151 in the first year once employer taxes and benefits and a search fee are counted, and at the mid-band day rate a fractional engagement does not reach that figure even at five days a week. So the reason to hire full-time in this market is not the price. It is that the seat is occupied every day, by somebody whose only employer is you.

What does the full-time figure include that the salary does not?

Employer Social Security and Medicare, federal and state unemployment tax, a retirement match and health insurance, which is the line with no British equivalent and often the largest after salary. A one-off search fee sits on top in the first year. Every statutory rate is cited on the US employer cost page and each assumption is labelled as one.

What moves a fractional CTO to the top of the band in the US?

Higher end for regulated sectors, AI systems and technical due diligence.

Where these numbers come from

The day-rate band is the one published for every seat on the the United States day rates page, stated there as market observation rather than survey data. The monthly figures run through the same function every other monthly figure on this site uses, so a number here cannot disagree with a number there or with the calculator. The statutory employer rates are current federal ones and are cited in full on the US employer cost page. The salary, the state unemployment figure, the health insurance figure and the retirement match are assumptions, marked as such in the table, and each is set where it makes the fractional side look worse rather than better.
