Hiring a senior fractional executive in London
London carries the deepest pool of fractional executives in Europe and the top of every day-rate band in the UK. That premium is not about the postcode. Most engagements now run remote or hybrid with a day on site, so what the London rate actually buys is depth: the CFO who has been through the raise you are about to attempt, or the CTO who has rebuilt the platform you are about to outgrow.
What a senior fractional executive costs in London
A fractional CFO in London runs £800 to £1,500 a day. Most engagements are one to three days a week, so at two days that is roughly £6,900 to £13,000 a month.
These are the bands published on our seat pages, taken from live listings rather than from a survey. The top of each band is where fundraise work, exit work and regulated sectors sit.
Against the full-time seat
A full-time CFO in London is £140,000 to £200,000, plus bonus, plus equity, plus employer National Insurance and pension on top of the salary itself. The arithmetic that matters is not the headline difference, it is whether the work is genuinely part-time. If you need five days of the seat, the full-time hire is better value and the fractional one is a false economy. The cost calculator will run both sides with the employer costs counted.
What is different about hiring here
Your options, and what each one is good at
What to ask a candidate in London
- What is the smallest company you have held this seat at, and what was different about it?
- How many clients are you carrying right now, and what happens in the week they all need you?
- Have you taken a company through the specific thing we are heading for: a raise, an exit, a turnaround, a first enterprise contract?
- Who determines your off-payroll status on your other engagements, and how is it documented?
- What would you want to see in your first week, and what would make you tell us this is the wrong hire?
The rules above are covered properly on their own page: UK off-payroll status for fractional work, cited to HMRC. This guide states the rule; that page works through it.
Which seat you are actually hiring
The city changes the rate and the paperwork, not the job. What each seat covers, what it costs and when it is the wrong hire is set out across the eleven seat pages. If the role turns out to be five days a week and permanent, we find full-time executives too.
Common questions
How much does a fractional CFO cost in London?
Between £800 and £1,500 a day in London, with most engagements running one to three days a week. At two days a week that is roughly £6,400 to £12,000 a month. The top of the band is fundraise work, exit work and regulated sectors.
Is a fractional CFO cheaper than a full-time CFO in London?
Usually, but only because you are buying less of them. A full-time London CFO is £140,000 to £200,000 plus bonus, equity, employer National Insurance and pension. A fractional CFO at two days a week costs roughly £75,000 to £140,000 a year with no employment costs on top. If you genuinely need five days of CFO, full-time is better value.
Does IR35 apply to a fractional executive?
The off-payroll rules can apply to any engagement with a contractor working through their own company. For medium and large private companies the client makes the status determination; for small companies the operator does. A genuine fractional arrangement, with several concurrent clients and no obligation to offer or accept work, is generally easier to defend than a long full-time interim, but the determination still has to be made and documented.
How quickly can a fractional CFO start in London?
One to three weeks is typical, against three to six months for a permanent appointment once notice periods are counted. That gap is the main practical reason companies hire fractionally rather than the cost saving.
What is the difference between a fractional CFO and a part-time FD?
Mostly the name. Part-time finance director is the older British term for the same arrangement. In practice a CFO title tends to signal more board, investor and fundraise exposure, and a finance director title more hands-on control of the finance function, but the two overlap heavily and you should read what somebody has actually done rather than what they call themselves.
