Fractional CMO or a virtual CMO?

The short answer: in most cases these are the same job under two names, and the market does not agree on a definition for either. Here is what genuinely varies between providers, what to ask instead of trusting the label, and where the two words really do mean different things.

Are they the same thing?

Often the same thing, and the providers disagree about which. Every fractional CMO works remotely some of the time, so by the plain meaning of the word they are all virtual. In practice the phrase is used by agencies and platforms to sell a packaged, subscription marketing service in which a senior marketer may appear for an hour a month, and there is no agreed definition to settle it. Decide what you are buying by asking for days and names, not by the adjective.

Names in use for roughly this arrangement: Virtual CMO, or vCMO, Virtual chief marketing officer, Fractional CMO, Part-time marketing director, the older British term, Outsourced CMO, or outsourced marketing leadership and CMO as a Service, in the platform versions.

What actually varies, whatever it is called

How many senior hours the subscription buysA fractional engagement is priced in days, so the product is visible. A virtual CMO subscription is priced by tier, and the senior time inside the tier may be an hour a month. Ask for the number; if nobody will state it, the senior time is small.
Whether the strategist is also the vendorWhen an agency sells the virtual CMO tier, the person setting the channel plan works for the firm that profits from the channels. That is not disqualifying, and it is a conflict worth naming in the contract: who decides the budget, and whether the agency's own services get recommended by somebody paid by the agency.
Whether anybody will ever be in the roomPositioning gets decided in a leadership meeting, usually by argument. A fractional CMO is at that table. A fully virtual service may send a deck instead, and if the problem is that nobody can explain the company in a sentence, the deck will not fix it.
Who holds the relationshipA firm or platform assigns somebody and may rotate them without asking. A fractional CMO is one named person, and if they leave, the relationship and the context go with them. Neither is better. They are different risks, and the contract should say which one you have taken and what happens when it lands.

Ask these instead of trusting the label

What a virtual CMO actually is

A marketing leader delivered remotely, often by an agency or a platform, on a monthly subscription. At one end it is a fractional CMO who works from elsewhere, which describes most of them; at the other it is an agency's strategy tier with a senior title attached and an hour of that person a month.

What each one owns

A fractional CMOA virtual CMO
Positioning, channel strategy and the budget, as the person accountable for themRemote delivery, which suits a distributed team and costs less to run
The pipeline number, agreed with salesExecution capacity bundled in, when the provider is an agency
A stated number of days, so the price has a product behind itA lower entry price for a company that needs campaigns before it needs strategy
The agency relationship, from the client's side of the tableContinuity from a firm rather than from one named person

What neither of them does

Neither replaces the people who make the work. A fractional CMO directs an agency or a team; a virtual CMO package from an agency directs itself, which is the conflict to watch: the strategy tier recommending the agency's own services.

How each one fails

The fractional CMO: Being hired by a company that needed campaigns shipped more than it needed a strategy, where two days a week of judgement sits above nobody who can execute it.

A virtual CMO: Being bought as a CMO by a company whose real problem is positioning, where a dashboard, a content calendar and a monthly call cannot sit in the leadership meeting and argue for killing a channel the founder likes.

What they cost, on the same basis

A fractional CMO charges £700 to £1,300 a day, and most engagements run one to three days a week. A monthly subscription priced by tier rather than by days, so the amount of senior time inside it is rarely stated and is often the thing to ask about. The monthly and annual arithmetic for the fractional side, against a full-time equivalent, is on the cost page for this seat.

Pick a virtual CMO when

We would rather say that plainly than win an engagement that was the wrong shape. Nobody pays us to list on the bench, so there is nothing in it for us either way.

When you want both

A common and sensible pairing when the virtual provider is honest about being an agency: the fractional CMO sets the strategy and the number, and the agency's package delivers against it. The mistake is paying for the strategy tier and receiving the delivery tier with a senior name on the invoice.

Common questions

Is a fractional CMO cheaper than a virtual CMO?

On a like-for-like basis it usually is, because you buy the days you need rather than all of them. A fractional CMO runs £700 to £1,300 a day, most often one to three days a week. A monthly subscription priced by tier rather than by days, so the amount of senior time inside it is rarely stated and is often the thing to ask about. But cheaper is the wrong question if the work genuinely needs the other one.

When should I pick a virtual CMO instead?

Execution is the gap and strategy is already settled, so bundled capacity is worth more than a named leader The company is fully remote and a subscription matters more than a person in the room Spend is too small for a day a week of senior time to be used

Can I have both?

A common and sensible pairing when the virtual provider is honest about being an agency: the fractional CMO sets the strategy and the number, and the agency's package delivers against it. The mistake is paying for the strategy tier and receiving the delivery tier with a senior name on the invoice.

What are virtual CMO services?

A packaged, remotely delivered marketing leadership service, usually sold on a monthly subscription by an agency or a platform. The package normally bundles some strategy time from a senior marketer with reporting and, when the provider is an agency, execution. The amount of senior time varies enormously between providers and is the thing to establish before comparing prices.
